Klaipėda Brass Quintet

Klaipėda Brass Quintet is the first and only ensemble of brass instruments in Klaipėda founded in 1986 by trumpeter Vilmantas Bružas. After the Quintet’s debut performance the same year, critics characterized it as “a debutant that surpassed all expectations.” The ensemble is currently led by trumpeter Sigitas Petrulis.

It presents trendy programmes, in which brass instruments are combined with the voice, guitar, percussion instruments and electronics. It also takes an active part in educational programmes and family concerts. In each of their performances the ensemble’s players aim to create an engaging atmosphere and sometimes even introduce some playful concepts with theatrical elements. The Quintet’s repertoire ranges from the Renaissance to the 21st century and jazz music. Quite a few pieces were especially written for this ensemble by the Klaipėda-based composers. It has given performances not only in Lithuania but also in Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands, France and Poland.

Sigitas Petrulis graduated from the Klaipėda Stasys Šimkus Conservatory and the Lithuanian State Conservatory (now the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre) and honed his skills at the Rimsky-Korsakov Saint Petersburg State Conservatory and the Mozarteum University in Salzburg.

In autumn 2016 Sigitas Petrulis accepted a new challenge by taking over the artistic leadership of the Klaipėda Brass Quintet as its new Artistic Director. He also works as leader of the trumpet section at the Klaipėda State Musical Theatre and soloist with the Palanga Orchestra and teaches at the Klaipėda Faculty of the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre.

A talented musician and prize-winner of a number of national and international competitions, he has appeared as a soloist with various Lithuanian orchestras, including the Klaipėda Chamber Orchestra. His previous engagements have included the Lithuanian State Symphony and the Lithuanian National Symphony orchestras, as well as the Wind Quintet of the Lithuanian National Philharmonic.
