Which activity do you prefer – playing and making music or painting?
Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis managed to combine both: he was trained as a professional musician and artist, even though he was better known as a painter at the time. In his innovative work, he sought the synthesis of musical and visual expression by applying the principles of musical composition in his paintings.
The sea is one of the prevalent motifs in the work of this multitalented artist, which epitomizes such universal notions as eternity, freedom, life and the world: "The mighty sea. Majestic, immense, immeasurable. The azure infinity of the sky envelops your waves and you, full of grandeur, are breathing, all calm and peaceful, because you know that your power, your vastness and your existence is boundless."
We will mark the 110th anniversary of Čiurlionis's death this April. We invite you to remember his extraordinary personality in a podcast "Čiurlionis and the Sea."
