Brothers Motiejus, Mykolas and Benediktas Bazaras have been interested in traditional and modern ways of making music since their early childhood. The wide-ranging record collection in their home library and diverse possibilities for learning music provided by their parents enabled them to try different roles in music – from taking lessons in classical piano to participation in various jazz, funk, rock, pop and electronic music side-projects.
Having accumulated experience in diverse musical styles and genres, the Bazaras brothers decided to come to grips with the work of one of the towering figures in Lithuanian art, Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis. A composer turned painter, he was an artist ahead of his time. Researchers of his creative legacy often note the complementarity of his musical works and paintings.
The Bazaras brothers interpret his ideas by rendering them via modern means of musical expression. They recompose Čiurlionis’s piano pieces employing the elements of jazz, rock and electronic music in their own unique way. In an attempt to highlight an inherent interconnection between Čiurlionis’s musical compositions and paintings, they named each new piece after a certain painting of the famous “Zodiac” series.
