In this programme presented by the Klaipėda Chamber Orchestra we are going to meet an outstanding musician, celebrated cellist and conductor David Geringas. According to the orchestra’s Artistic Director, Mindaugas Bačkus, “in 2019, Geringas became the face of the International Klaipėda Cello Competition. The competition was named after him and thus Klaipėda became an important spot on the global map of the cellist’s concert itineraries.”
Geringas returns to Klaipėda almost every year. This year his return was slated for the competition but it was cancelled due to the pandemic. The most talented cellists and cello music lovers from around the world will be welcomed in Klaipėda in two years, the beginning of May 2023.
The programme devised by Geringas is entitled “Cellissimo,” with reference to the cello as a solo instrument. Geringas will perform solo with the orchestra in Antonín Dvořák’s “Waldesruhe” (Anatolijus Šenderovas’ arrangement for cello and strings). For many years Šenderovas and Geringas have been creative partners and pals.
The programme also features Édouard Lalo’s Cello Concerto in D minor, in which the cello solo part will be entrusted to Rugilė Juknevičiūtė who made a memorable appearance in the 2nd International Klaipėda Cello Competition in 2019.
The programme will close with Antonín Dvořák’s Serenade for strings, a piece written in less than two weeks in May 1875, which remains among his most popular orchestral works. Its five movements combine the cantabile style, a slow waltz, a high-spirited scherzo, lyrical beauty and exuberance.
