In this concert the Klaipėda Brass Quintet will welcome their young colleagues from Vilnius, the Brass Ensemble of the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre, under the artistic leadership of Marius Balčytis. We know the latter musician as an outstanding trombonist; but this time, instead of playing, he will appear as a conductor. Having graduated from the Stasys Šimkus Conservatory in Klaipėda, which is famous for producing many excellent wind players, he now leads an ensemble of his students, some of whom also happen to be alumni of the same conservatory.
As a matter of fact, four out of five members of the Klaipėda Brass Quintet – that is, Sigitas Petrulis (artistic director, trumpet), Monika Miliauskienė (horn), Evaldas Bružas (trombone) and Vidmantas Liasis (tuba) – were educated at the Šimkus Conservatory. The one and only Alius Maknavičius received his initial training as a trumpet player at the Juozas Gruodis Conservatory in Kaunas.
“Bridges Made of Brass” will unite wind players (to be precise, the Brass Ensemble of the LAMT will also include percussion instruments) from different generations, cities, and with different artistic experience who perform and listen to different kinds of music. But when gathered together, they will fill the ground floor foyer of the Klaipėda Concert Hall with the blare and rumble that is certainly meant to awaken your bodies from winter slumber.
